Writer's Block: Where's the receipt?
What was the worst significant purchase you ever made, and why?

We bought a Volkswagen Rabbit back in 1979 or so. We had a 54 VW bug that was still running and wanted a good car, so we turned to VW. We live on a dirt road and I was a paper carrier out in to country on dirt roads, too. The Rabbit had the air intake under the engine and it basically vacuumed sand up off the road and injected it through the fuel injectors into the engine. We had to have it rebuilt twice in the first two years. One night when I was slowing down at a paper tube one of the CV joints broke. The final straw was when I got into the car on the way home from work (not the paper route anymore) and pushed down on the stick to get ti into reverse. It went crunch, crunch. The coupling or whatever you call it was plastic. I actually fished the stick up to where it should be and got it in gear and drove it home. We got it fixed and traded it in on a ford Escort, all we could afford. When Bob brought it home he said "Think of it as a radio with wheels," but it was one of the most reliable cars we ever had.

We had a Ford Escort too! Back in maybe '85 or so. Powder Blue, it was my first "new" vehicle. I loved that little car. It was so good in the snow. We still own Fords - I now have an Expedition so we could tow our camper. It's at 150,000 miles, and she's starting to show her age, poor baby.

Right now we drive a 97 Lincoln Town Car (known as the Dorkmobile, but then we are old) which we got for the trips to Maine. It has 190000 miles on it and runs like a top. It is like driving you living room to Maine. Hope to meet next summer.
